Whenever I buy mince I usually make keema-mattar or keema potatoes - basically a dry side dish to be eaten with chapathis. However my son got bored of it and asked me if I could make some biryani instead.
.
So I decided to try this simple yet lip-smacking mince pulao which can be made in a jiffy. I served it with regular cucumber raitha topped with some boondi and garnished with a sprinkle of roasted jeera powder.

Rava Mutli (dumplings) - made from rice rava (cream of rice). Easy and yummy! Used to be my kids' favourite breakfast when they were toddlers. I enjoy making the dimples on each dumpling and love to have them with coconut chutney and bisi bisi kaapi 😀

Vorn anyone? This is a traditional Mangalorean dessert that is made from moong dal (split green gram), coconut milk & jaggery. Many people make it for the Monthi feast/harvest feast that is celebrated on September 8th. In our home it was prepared occasionally as a birthday treat and not really for the Monthi feast and I didn't really like it when I was a kid but as an adult I can't have enough of it! I thought a quick video would help those who have never tasted or tried their hand at making it, so here's how!

The Alun Dento is a very traditional vegetarian curry that is famously made on the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary that falls on September 8th. On this day we also celebrate the harvest feast in & around Mangalore. 'Alun' is one of the two varieties of Colocasia differentiated by the dark coloured stalks and leaves. The leaves are used in the preparation of Pathrade/Pathrode (Steamed Rice Cakes) as well. The Dento which essentially means ‘stalk/stem’ is the stalk of a particular variety of the leafy greens that grows 4-5 ft tall – Dento Baji as we call it. The Alun and the Dento together come to make this lovely gravy.

Ragi Chocolate Cake - Gluten free

Modified a basic ragi cake recipe to make it more chocolatey as I wasn't sure if my kids would receive a plain ragi cake. The ‘no-chocolate-cakes-for-me’ husband also liked this cake. The son had no clue that this cake contained ragi, something he abandoned eating after the several bowlfuls he gulped as a baby and the daughter willingly ate slice after slice until she had had enough. This was the highlight of our week and I am hoping you like it, especially if you are looking for a gluten free cake. The cocoa and addition of melted chocolate successfully masks the deep, earthy flavour of ragi. .
